Gnomonology: Intro to Keyframe Animation in Maya - By Srinivas

This two part tutorial explores, in detail, how to keyframe animate in Maya using all of the core techniques available. We will focus on a classic bouncing ball animation and learn how to use the primary animation interface, the Graph Editor, as well as the timing interface of the Dope Sheet. In chapter two, we create a small story animation for our reel and render it to completion. For those new to Maya, this tutorial gives you the fundamental skills necessary to begin animating your own projects and scenes.

Gnomonology: IMAGE SEQUENCE TO QUICKTIME When rendering animations from Maya, Max or any other 3D application, it is common practice to render them out as image sequences (image.001.tga, image.002.tga, etc.). These sequences, however, can become difficult to manage, load, archive, preview or present to a client or supervisor. The most effective solution is to convert them to movie files such as Quicktime or AVI. This tutorial demonstrates how to convert a sequence to Quicktime using After Effects, including loading the sequence, creating the AE project and rendering using compression codecs.

Mental Ray Importons and Irradiance Particles rendering algorithm, is a novel approach to compute global illumination based on importance sampling, which tends to converge much faster to a desirable quality than the existing solutions like global illumination photon tracing combined with final gathering.
Everybody seems to agree that this Mental Ray rendering algorithm, represent the future of 3d Rendering and is still in the Optimization Phase.

This tutorial provides a detailed demonstration of how to approach outdoor lighting for any time of day. We begin by discussing the nature of outdoor light, the sun, the sky, shadows and the use of reference material. In Maya we focus on a direct illumination approach utilizing both the native renderer and Mental Ray, while also discussing the use of skyDomes, bounce light, raytracing, optiFX, Final Gather and Ambient Occlusion. Various times of day are created, including morning, noon, afternoon, evening and night. Animated lighting tests are rendered and composited in After Effects, incorporating Z-depth based Depth-of-Field, Highlight Blooming and other filter adjustments to make our renders feel more photographic.

This demonstration is a four hour timelapse of the entire making of the African Woman by Rick Baker. There is no audio. Rick begins with a simple humanoid torso basemesh from which he sculpts the woman. The final result consists of several subtools that originate from mesh extractions. The demo is made with Zbrush 3.0 beta, therefore the interface looks a little different from the final release.
While there is no audio, this timelapse demonstration represents an
amazing opportunity to watch a master sculptor at work.

These chapters represent a technical overview of how the image 'Fume' was created using Maya, Zbrush and Photoshop.
In contrast to some of my other work on Gnomonology, Fume was created without any initial design direction.
There was no sketch to develop, as was the case with Jester or Trin. Therefore this tutorial demonstrates a slightly different workflow as I allowed a design to evolve organically. The actual creation of Fume was not recorded, therefore these lectures are all created in realtime as I explain, in detail, the process of creating the image. 'Fume' has been toprow plugged at CGtalk, zbrushcentral, 3Dtotal and was a 'daily deviation' at Deviant Art.

The Refinery Project is a four chapter tutorial that demonstrates, in real-time, how to bring a static image to life in seven hours. Starting with a static photo of an oil refinery, Alex integrates 2D and 3D elements using Maya, After Effects and Photoshop.

Chapter One: Sprite Rendered Smokestacks
In chapter one, sprite rendered smoke is added to several of the refinery's smokestacks. Topics include: Importing the image plane, aligning the 3D camera, adding 3D reference geometry, volume emission, fields, sprite set-up, expressions, adjusting particle speed without changing behavior, hardware rendering separate elements, motion blur, particle disk caching, compositing, color correction and final integration.

Chapter Two: Sky and Water Replacement
In chapter two, the original sky and static water of the refinery photo are replaced. Using Photoshop, we mask out the original sky, replace it, then color correct to match the lighting of the scene. For the water we use Maya's Ocean Shader to create animated water that integrates perfectly into our scene, including reflection of the backplate and shore/pier intersection through the use of camera projections.

Chapter Three: Rolling Sprite Fog
In chapter three, animated fog is added to the Maya scene using volume emission, fields, sprites, expressions, disk caching, hardware rendering and motion blur. All necessary steps are discussed as we build the effect from scratch and integrate it into our composite. Final tweaks are added in After Effects including color correction, level adjustments, masking and movement.

Chapter Four: Shoreline, Birds, Particle Instancing
In this final chapter, we begin by adding a new foreground shoreline and some rocks in the water. We pull elements from a photo using masking, fringe removal and warping. We then move to Maya to create a dynamic flock of birds that fly into frame. The bird effect is created from scratch including joints, skinning, looping animation, UVs, texturing, particle instancing, emitters, fields, expressions, lighting, rendering and the final composite of the Refinery Project.

This tab can take your renderings from 20 second quick tests to 30 minute high quality renders without having to adjust any other aspect of the rendering. They control anything from fine detailed textures, to glossy reflections and refraction, to aspects like depth-of-field and motion blur, all at once. This tutorial helps to make sense of each one and simplify the process, so that the user can easily control the quality of the rendering in the most efficient way.

Sample scene requirements: Max 8 or higher, Vray 1.5rc3 or higher. All textures provided except HDR. Users must provide their own HDRI for testing.

How to quickly manage light/object connections
Successfull lighting requires the simulation of reflected light. While Global Illumination is a possible approach to automate the process, this can be expensive in terms of render time. The direct lighting technique is conceptually simple, as one adds additional lights which represent light bounce. One of the key Maya tools for this process is the ability to exclusively link lights to specific surfaces. While the Light Linking window is simple enough, its functionality breaks down in geometry heavy scenes. In this tutorial we look an alternate technique for light linking which is far more effective.

Gnomonology: THE MAKING OF TRIN | 2.85 GB

Trin was started to create a high-res 4k still image, yet evolved to become a looping ten second animation rendered in vertical HD at 1200x1920 to be displayed on a wall-mounted digital display. Starting from a personal sketch, Trin was created in twenty hours using Photoshop, Maya, Zbrush, UVlayout, Bodypaint and Mental Ray. The entire process was recorded and is demonstrated using timelapse footage, where I explain every step with an emphasis on both the technical and aesthetic thought processes.

The first step of rigging any character or creature is to build a skeleton. This lecture explains, in detail, everything that you need to know in order to create rig friendly joints. Using the character 'Jester' as our example, we create the skeleton that will be used for skinning and animation. Each of the joint creation tools is discussed, with an emphasis on how joint placement and orientation will affect rig behavior later on. Once Inverse Kinematic controls have been applied and the geometry has been skinned, these things are hard to change. Therefore, it is critical that the skeleton creation process is methodical.

When texturing objects in a 3D application, it is often necessary to use a texture that can be tiled. This means that when the image repeats there is no visible seam. For example, when mapping an image around a sphere or cylinder, the left edge of the texture will touch the right edge as the texture wraps around. Or a texture may be repeated several times on a surface to eliminate the need for an ultra high-res texture. Regardless of the situation, it is critical to know how to take photographic source material and tile it using Photoshop. This tutorial demonstrates the process of tiling a texture and testing the results in a 3D application, in this case Maya.
