Terrorism Informatics: Knowledge Management and Data Mining for Homeland Security

Terrorism Informatics: Knowledge Management and Data Mining for Homeland Security

Terrorism Informatics: Knowledge Management and Data Mining for Homeland Security

Product Description

Terrorism informatics has been defined as the application of advanced methodologies, information fusion and analysis techniques to acquire, integrate process, analyze, and manage the diversity of terrorism-related information for international and homeland security-related applications. The wide variety of methods used in terrorism informatics are derived from Computer Science, Informatics, Statistics, Mathematics, Linguistics, Social Sciences, and Public Policy and these methods are involved in the collection of huge amounts of information from varied and multiple sources and of many types in numerous languages. Information fusion and information technology analysis techniques which include data mining, data integration, language translation technologies, and image and video processing play central roles in the prevention, detection, and remediation of terrorism.

While there has been substantial investment on computer technology research applications to terrorism, much of the results and the literature has been a fragmented hodgepodge that is too narrowly focused on unconnected and unlinked discipline domains. As a result, there has been little effort to relate the research across the discipline domains from which terrorism informatics is drawn.

Albright's Chemical Engineering Handbook

Image

"Albright's Chemical Engineering Handbook, a multi-year endeavor by Professor Emeritus Lyle Albright, was published by CRC Press in November 2008. The book, 1982 pages in length, provides updated information on topics from engineering fundamentals to plant operations and also address the pertinent engineering subjects of patents and intellectual property, effective communication and ethics. Diverse leaders in their respective fields have contributed to the book.

Albright stresses that his book is a handbook, not a text book. "It's a condensed text that is intended to get the reader started on a subject and to then provide references for further information", Albright states. The handbook will serve the needs of chemical engineering students, practicing chemical engineers and management. Professor Albright hopes that his handbook will be useful to chemical and other engineers and will bring honor to Purdue University.

Thank you Professor Albright! We look forward to owning and using your handbook."

[Marvel] Mystique - 24 Comics

Mystique

Image

Little is known about Mystique's past due to the fact that she can eliminate the outward signs of aging with her shape-changing power, and it's not known exactly how old she is. She apparently learned to use her shape-changing power at a very early age, for there is no evidence known to the public or the government that Raven Darkholme ever looked like anything but a normal human being. Years ago Mystique had an affair with Victor Creed and they had a son, Graydon Creed, the recently-assassinated presidential candidate and hater of mutants. Mystique has also claimed to be the mother of Nightcrawler. At some point in recent years Mystique became the protector of the young mutant named Rogue, and looked upon Rogue as if she where her own daughter. While Rogue was under her care, she maintained the false identity of Mallory Brickman, the wife of U.S. Senator Ralph Brickman and her adopted daughter, Gloria, was a result.

Mystique had concealed her superhuman powers and criminal intentions so well over the years that, as Raven Darkholme, she was able to rise rapidly through the United States Civil Service to the trusted position of Deputy Director of the Defense Advanced Research Planning Agency (DARPA) in the United States Department of Defense, giving her access to military secrets and advanced weaponry, both of which she used for her own criminal and subversive purposes.

Mystique organized the third incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, which originally consisted of herself, Avalanche, the Blob, Destiny, and Pyro. Mystique named her group after the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, an organization founded by Magneto.

This Brotherhood first became known when it attempted to intimidate the public by assassinating Senator Robert Kelly, who was investigating what he perceived was the possible danger posed by the existence of any superhuman beings. The X-Men thwarted the assassination attempt, and the Brotherhood later clashed with the X-Men on other occasions, as well as the Avengers and other heroes. Rogue was a member of the Brotherhood for a time but finally left to join the X-Men in order to find help in learning how to deal with her superhuman powers.

Anti-mutant sentiment among normal human beings had greatly increased, and the federal government launched its own covert anti-mutant program, Project: Wideawake. Believing that the times had become too dangerous for the Brotherhood to continue its criminal activities, Mystique went to Dr. Valerie Cooper, special assistant to the head of the National Security Council, and offered the Brotherhood's services to the government. Cooper agreed to convey the offer to the President, on the condition that the Brotherhood pass a test she imposed: the capture of Magneto. The Brotherhood, now renamed Freedom Force, succeeded in bringing Magneto to the authorities (only because he voluntarily surrendered to them) and soon afterwards officially entered the government's employ. In return, and as Freedom Force's leader, Mystique received a Presidential pardon for all criminal charges against her, but the pardon would be revoked if any member of Freedom Force was found committing a crime. During her time with Freedom Force, Mystique faced many new opponents such as the Grip, Avengers West Coast, and several other foes. During this stint, her team was sent to Muir Island and were confronted by the Reavers, who killed her teammate Stonewall. During the battle, Mystique charged Forge with the duty of protecting Destiny, which he did until Destiny convinced him that Mystique needed more help. After Forge left to help Mystique, Destiny was slain by a mind-controlled Legion. Afterwards, Mystique swore vengeance on Forge for her friend's death, but a visit by a future version of herself convinced her to take some time off to mourn the death of Destiny. During her time off, she went on a cruise and scattered Destiny's ashes into the ocean.

Raven recently made a deal with Professor Charles Xavier. Hunted by many countries for her acts of terrorism, Xavier offered her protection from being detected by them. In exchange, she was to act as Xavier's secret operative. If she was caught, Xavier would deny ever working with her. Former lover Forge aided her by providing technology while Shortpack acted as her handler. After completing quite a few missions, Mystique ended her working relationship with Xavier and infiltrated the Xavier Institute under the guise of Foxx, a student put in Gambit's squad. Her true identity revealed by Emma Frost, Raven claimed to want to join the X-Men and have a better relationship with her foster daughter. She has since gone working with a new associate, Pulse, who she thinks is a better fit for Rogue. Mystique's true motives, and who she was communicating with while inside the Institute, remain a mystery.

The CISSP Prep Guide: Mastering the Ten Domains of Computer Security

The CISSP Prep Guide: Mastering the Ten Domains of Computer Security
Wiley; 1 edition | ISBN: 0471413569 | 528 pages | August 24, 2001 | PDF | 4 Mb

The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) rating is difficult to earn and rare in the marketplace, which means you're a valuable commodity if you've proven your skills by passing the exam. The CISSP Prep Guide, one of only a handful of books on its subject, does a good job of giving readers a feel for the scope of the test and the style of its questions. It's ideal for use either as a preliminary survey of the CISSP subject areas (the test's publisher and the authors of this book call them "domains") for relative newcomers to computer security, or as a pure study guide to help more experienced professionals zero in on the weak spots in their knowledge. Don't expect to do well on the CISSP exam having only read this book. You'll want to have some practical experience and some specialized reading under your belt.

Ronald Krutz and Russell Vines are good writers and fine teachers; they explain the wide-ranging CISSP domains (which have to do with everything from cryptographic algorithms to fire-suppression techniques to legal principles). They take care to explain potentially unfamiliar terms--there's a good glossary in the back of this book--and employ conceptual diagrams well. However, the answer keys for the sample questions that conclude each chapter aren't annotated and some readers will wish for more references to specialized sources.

Australian Handbook of Public Sector Management

Australian Handbook of Public Sector Management
215 pages | Allen & Unwin (2001) | ISBN: 1865083399 | PDF | 1 Mb

The traditional view of public sector management is under challenge. The shifting boundaries of the public-private sector are changing the nature of the public sector in the 21st century, and placing increasing demands on managers. This user-friendly handbook examines the changes that have taken place over the last twenty years and addresses the practical issues faced by public servants today. It makes abundant use of exhibits, case studies and real world examples to illustrate key concepts in public sector management. By including many 'points for reference', the authors challenge readers to apply both theory and practice to those public services situations with which they are familiar.This book is a unique blend of academic and practical approaches to current management practices in the public sector. It has been designed to assist students and those new to the public sector to develop the knowledge and skills they require to provide high quality public services.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book: The Complete Guide for Pho

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers
-Martin Evening

Adobe Press
August 10, 2008
624 pages | PDF | 57MB

While Adobe Photoshop has long been their choice for editing digital photographs, many photographers want a more focused tool. That’s where Adobe Photoshop Lightroom comes in. Designed from the ground up with digital photographers in mind, Photoshop Lightroom offers powerful editing features in a streamlined interface that lets photographers import, sort, and organize images. This completely updated and expanded bestseller, The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book, was also written with photographers in mind. Author Martin Evening describes features in Photoshop Lightroom 2 in detail from a photographer’s perspective. As an established commercial and fashion photographer, Martin knows first-hand what photographers need for an efficient workflow. He has also been working with Lightroom from the beginning, monitoring the product’s development and providing feedback on the public beta. As a result, Martin knows the software inside and out, from image selection to image editing to image management.

The book structure has been organized to match a typical Lightroom workflow. The introductory chapter provides an overview of all the main Lightroom features, showing how Lightroom 2 was used on a studio photo shoot that was specially shot to illustrate the book. The following chapters cover all the essentials, such as importing photos, working with the Library module, and managing the catalog database. The biggest section of the book is devoted to working with the Develop module and provides some unique insights into working with new features such as the localized adjustment tools. There is also a whole chapter devoted to image sharpening and another on integrating Lightroom and Photoshop, where you will learn how to devise the best workflow methods for working between these two programs. This is followed by a chapter on printing and a presentation chapter on the Slideshow and Web modules. Lastly, there are two appendix chapters. One offers a complete overview of the Lightroom 2 preference settings, while the other provides some in-depth explanations and background reading on how the Lightroom program works.

DNS on Windows 2000

DNS on Windows 2000
O'Reilly Media; 2 edition | ISBN: 0596002300 | 376 pages | October 15, 2001 | CHM | 2 Mb

DNS on Windows 2000 is a special Windows-oriented edition of the classic DNS and BIND. The Domain Name System (DNS) is one of the Internet's fundamental building blocks: the distributed host information database that's responsible for translating names into addresses, routing mail to its proper destination, and many other services. As the preface says, if you're using the Internet, you're already using DNS--even if you don't know it. Besides covering general issues like installing, setting up, and maintaining the server, DNS on Windows 2000 tackles those specific to the Windows environment: integration between DNS and Active Directory, conversion from BIND to the Microsoft DNS server, and registry settings. You'll also acquire a grounding in:
* Security issues
* System tuning
* Caching
* Zone change notification
* Troubleshooting
* Planning for growth

If you're a Windows administrator, DNS on Windows 2000 is the operations manual you need for working with DNS every day; if you're a Windows user who simply wants to take the mystery out of the Internet, this book is a readable introduction to the Internet's architecture and inner workings. Topics include:
* What DNS does, how it works, and when you need to use it
* How to find your own place in the Internet's namespace
* Setting up name servers
* Integrating Active Directory with DNS
* Dynamic updates, storing zone information in Active Directory, and incremental zone transfers
* Using MX records to route mail
* Configuring hosts to use name servers
* Subdividing domains (parenting)
* Securing your name server: preventing unauthorized zone transfers
* Mapping one name to several servers for load sharing
* Troubleshooting: using nslookup, diagnosing common problems
