In Detail
Business rules can help your business by providing a level of agility and flexibility. As a developer, you will be largely responsible for implementing these business rules effectively, but implementing them systematically can often be difficult due to their complexity. Drools, or JBoss Rules, makes the process of implementing these rules quicker and handles the complexity, making your life a lot easier!

This book guides you through all of the features of Drools, such as dynamic rules, the event model, and Rete implementation with high performance indexing. It will help you to set up the JBoss Rules platform and start creating your own business. It's easy to start developing with Drools if you follow its real-world examples that are intended to make your life easier.

Starting with an introduction to the basic syntax that is essential for writing rules, the book will guide you through validation and human-readable rules that define, maintain, and support your business agility. As a developer, you will be expected to represent policies, procedures and. constraints regarding how an enterprise conducts its business; this book makes it easier by showing you it can be done.

A real-life example of a banking domain allows you to see how the internal workings of the rules engine operate. A loan approval process example shows the use of the Drools Flow module. Parts of a banking fraud detection system are implemented with Drools Fusion module, which is the Complex Event Processing part of Drools. This in turn, will help developers to work on preventing fraudulent users from accessing systems in an illegal way.

Finally, more technical details are shown on the inner workings of Drools, the implementation of the ReteOO algorithm, indexing, node sharing, and partitioning.

Performance Analysis of Communications Networks and Systems

Performance Analysis of Communications Networks and Systems

Piet Van Mieghem, «Performance Analysis of Communications Networks and Systems»
Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521855152 | 2006 | PDF | 542 pages | 10.69 MB

This rigorous and self-contained book describes mathematical and, in particular, stochastic methods to assess the performance of networked systems. It consists of three parts. Part one is a review of probability theory. Part two covers the classical theory of stochastic processes (Poisson, renewal, Markov, and queuing theory), which are considered to be the basic building blocks for performance evaluation studies. Part three focuses on the relatively new field of the physics of networks. This part deals with the recently obtained insights that many very different large complex networks - such as the Internet, World Wide Web, proteins, utility infrastructures, social networks - evolve and behave according to more general common scaling laws. This understanding is useful when assessing the end-to-end quality of communications services, for example, in Internet telephony, real-time video, and interacting games. Containing problems and solutions, this book is ideal for graduate students taking courses in performance analysis.

Service-Oriented Java Business Integration

Service-Oriented Java Business Integration
Packt Publishing | 2008-02-09 | ISBN: 1847194400 | 436 pages | PDF | 4 MB

The book first discusses the various integration approaches available and introduces the Enterprise Service Bus, which is a new Architectural pattern that can facilitate integrating services. ESB provides different forms of mediation services including routing and transformation. Java Business Integration (JBI) provides a collaboration framework that provides standard interfaces for integration components and protocols to plug into, thus allowing the assembly of Service-Oriented Integration (SOI) frameworks following the ESB pattern. JBI is based on JSR 208, which is an extension of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Once JBI and ESB are introduced, we look at how we have been doing service integration without either of these using traditional J2EE. The book then slowly introduces ESB and, with the help of code, showcases how easily things can be done using JBI.

Enterprise Web Services Security (Repost)

Enterprise Web Services Security (Repost)

Enterprise Web Services Security (Repost) Summary:

Charles River | ISBN: 1584504137 | 2005 | PDF | 432 pages | 1.68 MB

Learn to Protect Your Assets and Prevent Attacks! The use of Web Services for Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) transactions has created risks that expose critical assets to increasingly greater threats. Enterprise Web Services Security provides the information developers, application architects, and security professionals need to build security policies and strategies from the ground up in a Web Services environment. Most security books focus on computer or network security in isolation, relegating the other areas to overview chapters or appendices. A single-system view of security, however, is not adequate to describe a distributed Web Services-based environment as it causes the developer to have to piece together material from several resources in order to create secure Web sites and services. This book takes a holistic approach that mirrors the perspective developers need to take regardless of whether they are planning and implementing the security mechanisms for a Web Service, a Web site, or an enterprise. It details how to secure critical components such as workstations, servers, and networks, the goals behind an enterprise’s security policies, the policies an organization should have in place, and how to communicate those policies using WS-Policy Framework and WS-Security Policy. Various threats and attacks are also covered, as well as the identity management, authentication, authorization, access control, confidentiality, and integrity mechanisms needed to protect messages and transactions. Enterprise Web Services Security is the one book developers need to make all their security mechanisms work successfully to thwart attacks and protect assets.

Java for COBOL Programmers

Java for COBOL Programmers

John C. Byrne, «Java for COBOL Programmers»
Charles River | ISBN: 1584505656 | 2008 | PDF | 412 pages | 6.39 MB

COBOL, one of the oldest programming languages in current use, still provides the framework for many vital business, finance, and administrative programs and systems that companies and governments use in day-to-day activities. Scores of organizations are deciding to replace these legacy systems, including their core business systems, with more modern ones written in Java. The people who support these systems are valuable repositories of business process information, and they know how computer systems are used to meet those business process requirements. But they often don’t know Java. That’s where this book comes in. Java for COBOL Programmers,Third Edition uses COBOL examples to teach object-oriented principles and Java syntax. Instead of describing the Java object concepts and syntax in the abstract, or based on references using C or C++ programming languages, Java for COBOL Programmers, Third Edition presents various object-oriented concepts first in a COBOL context, and then in the Java syntax that supports this concept

Linux Thin Client Networks Design and Deployment

Linux Thin Client Networks Design and Deployment
Packt Publishing | 2007-08-10 | ISBN: 1847192041 | 176 pages | PDF | 2 MB

Written by an experienced Linux thin client network designer and implementer, this book for System Administrators covers the concepts of thin client networks and design issues for implementations of various sizes, followed by step-by-step HOW-TOs for all elements of implementing a thin client network based on open-source software. A thin, or lean client network is a client-server architecture where client computers depend primarily on a central server for processing activities. The thin clients focus on passing input to remote services and receiving and displaying the output; thin clients aren't as much about the hardware or software as about the design. With all the information you need to understand how the technology works, this book will help you evaluate how a Linux thin client network fits into your organization and make informed choices on the hardware and software needed to design and implement a stable work environment that meets the needs of your organization, large or small.

Learning PHP Data Objects

Learning PHP Data Objects
Packt Publishing | 2007-08-013 | ISBN: 1847192661 | 188 pages | PDF | 1.5 MB

This book is for PHP developers who need to use PHP Data Objects (PDO) for data abstraction. Covering an overview of PDO, getting started, error handling, prepared statements, handling rowsets, advanced uses, and use in an MVC application, it first describes the topic, then gives step-by-step instructions for a particular example. A final appendix covers the object-oriented features of PHP 5. Readers should be familiar with PHP and aware of the basics of data abstraction. Lighter, faster, more powerful than existing data abstraction interfaces, PDO is an open-source query abstraction layer for accessing databases and manipulating returned records that is used with a database-specific PDO driver to access a particular database. It has the same role as classic database abstraction layers such as ODBC and JDBC. PDO ships with PHP 5.1, and is available as a PECL extension for PHP 5.0; PDO requires the new OO features in the core of PHP 5, and so will not run with earlier versions of PHP.

Sams Teach Yourself Windows Networking in 24 Hours

Sams Teach Yourself Windows Networking in 24 Hours By John Pence, Peter Kuo
Publisher: Sams 1999-02-01 | 528 Pages | ISBN: 0672314754 | PDF (OCR from html) | 7.5 MB

Sams Teach Yourself Windows Networking in 24 Hours is the only introductory networking book on the market to focus on connectivity issues regarding all releases of Windows-95, 98, and NT. The book requires no previous knowledge of networking. In just 24 one-hour lessons, learn to understand network interface cards and drivers; the strengths and limitations of various cabling schemes; the intricacies of TCP/IP addressing, sub-netting and routing; the choices available in transport protocols, their strengths and weaknesses; and how and where to implement security measures to protect the network and its data

In recent years, Windows has adapted to the networked workplace. All versions of the Microsoft operating system can connect to other computers, both locally and remotely. Teach Yourself Windows Networking in 24 Hours tells you what you need to know to make Windows machines work in concert, plus it includes additional information.

The authors begin with the most basic network of all: the direct cable connection. From there, they move on through the process of configuring peer-to-peer and client/server networks for all sorts of resource-sharing purposes. Then they show--with lots of step-by-step procedures and screen shots--how to set up long-distance connections with dial-up networking. There's also a fine introduction to network troubleshooting. Throughout, the authors pay adequate attention to both Windows 98 and Windows NT. They distinguish their work with excellent NetWare coverage--a valuable inclusion, since so many existing networks are based on Novell technology.

However, several segments of this book aren't specific to Windows networking at all. Rather, they provide background information about networking technologies that, while worth knowing, isn't part of the essential how-to information many buyers of this book are likely to want. However, this extra information makes this book a fine study aid for the Microsoft Networking Essentials certification exam (70-058). In fact, it's better than many books specifically published for that purpose. --David Wall

JavaScript: The Definitive Guide

JavaScript: The Definitive Guide By David Flanagan
Publisher: O'Reilly 1998-07-15 | 784 Pages | ISBN: 1565923928 | PDF (OCR from html) | 1.9 MB

JavaScript is a powerful scripting language that can be embedded directly in HTML; it allows you to create dynamic, interactive Web-based applications that run completely within a Web browser.JavaScript: The Definitive Guide provides a thorough description of the core JavaScript language and its client-side framework, complete with sophisticated examples that show you how to handle common tasks. The book also contains a definitive, in-depth reference section that covers every core and client-side JavaScript function, object, method, property, constructor, and event handler. This third edition of JavaScript: The Definitive Guide describes the latest version of the language, JavaScript 1.2, as supported by Netscape Navigator 4 and Internet Explorer 4. The book also covers JavaScript 1.1, which is the first industry-standard version known as ECMAScript.

Since the earliest days of Internet scripting, Web developers have considered JavaScript: The Definitive Guide an essential resource. David Flanagan's approach, which combines tutorials and examples with easy-to-use syntax guides and object references, suits the typical programmer's requirements nicely. The brand-new fourth edition of Flanagan's "Rhino Book" includes coverage of JavaScript 1.5, JScript 5.5, ECMAScript 3, and the Document Object Model (DOM) Level 2 standard from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Interestingly, the author has shifted away from specifying--as he did in earlier editions--what browsers support each bit of the language. Rather than say Netscape 3.0 supports the Image object while Internet Explorer 3.0 does not, he specifies that JavaScript 1.1 and JScript 3.0 support Image. More usefully, he specifies the contents of independent standards like ECMAScript, which encourages scripters to write applications for these standards and browser vendors to support them. As Flanagan says, JavaScript and its related subjects are very complex in their pure forms. It's impossible to keep track of the differences among half a dozen vendors' generally similar implementations. Nonetheless, a lot of examples make reference to specific browsers' capabilities.

Though he does not cover server-side APIs, Flanagan has chosen to separate coverage of core JavaScript (all the keywords, general syntax, and utility objects like Array) from coverage of client-side JavaScript (which includes objects, like History and Event, that have to do with Web browsers and users' interactions with them. This approach makes this book useful to people using JavaScript for applications other than Web pages. By the way, the other classic JavaScript text--Danny Goodman's JavaScript Bible--isn't as current as this book, but it's still a fantastic (and perhaps somewhat more novice-friendly) guide to the JavaScript language and its capabilities. --David Wall

Topics covered: The JavaScript language (version 1.0 through version 1.5) and its relatives, JScript and ECMAScript, as well as the W3C DOM standards they're often used to manipulate. Tutorial sections show how to program in JavaScript, while reference sections summarize syntax and options while providing copious code examples.

Sams Teach Yourself Dynamic HTML in a Week

Sams Teach Yourself Dynamic HTML in a Week By Bruce Campbell, Rick Darnell
Publisher: Sams 1997-09 | 508 Pages | ISBN: 1575213354 | PDF (OCR from html) | 5.3 MB

This tutorial explores the use of the new Dynamic HTML technologies from both Microsoft and Netscape. The book teaches the new Dynamic HTML tags and concepts like the Document Object Model in a clear, step-by-step manner with lots of practical examples. The CD-ROM includes electronic versions of "Teach Yourself JavaScript" and "Teach Yourself VBScript".

As the title suggests, Teach Yourself Dynamic HTML in a Week is a straightforward tutorial, designed to provide you with enough information and practice to quickly begin coding for 4.0 browsers. While some titles lump multiple HTML topics together under the "Dynamic HTML" banner, this one sticks strictly to its subject, covering both Netscape and Microsoft implementations of scripting, HTML, and style sheets to create dynamic and interactive content. Advanced topics, such as the integration of multiple languages and objects into your Web site design, are also considered. Each chapter represents a day's lesson plan and covers a single topic in depth. Workshop and wrap-up sections are included in each lesson for hands-on practice. The appendices provide excellent reference for HTML 4, JavaScript, VBScript, and cascading style sheets. All of the included source code and HTML examples--as well as recommended Web creation utilities and electronic versions of related titles--are available on the book's companion Web site.
