Learning Functional Programming Through Multimedia

The Haskell School of Expression: Learning Functional Programming Through Multimedia By Professor Paul Hudak
Publisher: Cambridge University Press 2007 | 382 Pages | ISBN: 0521644089 | DJVU | 8 MB

Functional programming is a style of programming that emphasizes the use of functions (in contrast to object-oriented programming, which emphasizes the use of objects). It has become popular in recent years because of its simplicity, conciseness, and clarity. This book teaches functional programming as a way of thinking and problem solving, using Haskell, the most popular purely functional language. Rather than using the conventional (boring) mathematical examples commonly found in other programming language textbooks, the author uses examples drawn from multimedia applications, including graphics, animation, and computer music, thus rewarding the reader with working programs for inherently more interesting applications. Aimed at both beginning and advanced programmers, this tutorial begins with a gentle introduction to functional programming and moves rapidly on to more advanced topics. Details about progamming in Haskell are presented in boxes throughout the text so they can be easily found and referred to.

Unicode Explained

Unicode Explained

Unicode Explained

Product Description

Fundamentally, computers just deal with numbers. They store letters and other characters by assigning a number for each one. There are hundreds of different encoding systems for mapping characters to numbers, but Unicode promises a single mapping. Unicode enables a single software product or website to be targeted across multiple platforms, languages and countries without re-engineering. It’s no wonder that industry giants like Apple, Hewlett-Packard, IBM andMicrosoft have all adopted Unicode.

Containing everything you need to understand Unicode, this comprehensive reference from O’Reilly takes you on a detailed guide through the complex character world. For starters, it explains how to identify and classify characters - whether they’re common, uncommon, or exotic. It then shows you how to type them, utilize their properties, and process character data in a robust manner.

The book is broken up into three distinct parts. The first few chapters provide you with a tutorial presentation of Unicode and character data. It gives you a firm grasp of the terminology you need to reference various components, including character sets, fonts and encodings, glyphs and character repertoires.

The middle section offers more detailed information about using Unicode and other character codes. It explains the principles and methods of defining character codes, describes some of the widely used codes, and presents code conversion techniques. It also discusses properties of characters, collation and sorting, line breaking rules and Unicode encodings. The final four chapters cover more advanced material, such as programming to support Unicode.

You simply can’t afford to be without the nuggets of valuable information detailed in Unicode Explained.

Longitudinal Data and SAS: A Programmer's Guide

Ronald P. Cody, "Longitudinal Data and SAS: A Programmer's Guide"
SAS Publishing | 2001 | ISBN: 1580259243 | 150 pages | PDF | 1,2 MB

Working with longitudinal data introduces a unique set of challenges. Once you've mastered the art of performing calculations within a single observation of a data set, you're faced with the task of performing calculations or making comparisons between observations. It is simple to look backward in data sets, but how do you look forward and across observations? Ron Cody provides straightforward answers to these and other questions. This book details useful techniques for conducting operations between observations in a SAS data set. For quick reference, the book is conveniently organized to cover: tools--an introduction to powerful SAS programming techniques for longitudinal data; case studies--a variety of illuminating examples that use Ron's techniques; and macros--detailed descriptions of helpful longitudinal data macros. Beginning to intermediate SAS users will appreciate this book's informative, easy-to-comprehend style. And those users who frequently process longitudinal data will learn to make the most of their analyses by following Ron's methodologies.

XAML in a Nutshell

XAML in a Nutshell

XAML in a Nutshell

Product Description

When Microsoft releases Windows Vista, the new operating system will support applications that employ graphics now used by computer games–clear, stunning, and active. The cornerstone for building these new user interfaces is XAML (”Zammel”), the XML-based markup language that works with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Vista’s new graphics subsystem.

An acronym for Extensible Application Markup Language, XAML offers a wealth of new controls and elements with exciting capabilities, including animation and rendering of 3D graphics. Windows developers are already jazzed by the possibilities of using XAML for fixed and flow format documents like PDF and HTML, 2D and 3D vector-based graphics, form development, animation, audio and video, transparent layering, and a lot more. Many feel that XAML will eliminate the need for multiple file formats or plug-ins (read: Flash), while lowering development costs and reducing time to market.

The problem is, most developers don’t know XAML. While it is fairly easy to understand, you still need a quick guide to bring you up to speed before Vista’s release, and that’s where this book’s simple, no nonsense approach comes in.

XAML in a Nutshell covers everything necessary to design user interfaces and .NET applications that take advantage of WPF. Prerequisites such as Microsoft’s new unified build system, MSBuild, and core XAML constructs and syntax–including shortcuts–are all presented with plenty of examples to get you started. The Core XAML Reference section lets you dig even deeper into syntax rules and attributes for all XAML elements with a series of quick-reference chapters. This section divides XAML elements into logical categories of elements, controls, shapes and geometry, layout, animations, and transformations for easy reference.

XAML in a Nutshell helps you learn, firsthand, how to use this XML-based markup language to implement the new generation of user interface graphics. As one reviewer noted, “Strong code examples and an efficient, conversational style take the tedium out of learning XAML and make the subject understandable–even interesting.”

Remote Sensing: The Image Chain Approach

Remote Sensing: The Image Chain Approach
Oxford University Press, USA | 2007-05-25 | ISBN: 0195178173 | 688 pages | PDF | 39,6 MB

Remote Sensing deals with the fundamental ideas underlying the rapidly growing field of remote sensing. John Schott explores energy-matter interaction, radiation propagation, data dissemination, and described the tools and procedures required to extract information from remotely sensed data using the image chain approach. Organizations and individuals often focus on one aspect of the remote sensing process before considering it as a whole, thus investigating unjustified effort, time, and expense to get minimal improvement. Unlike other books on the subject, Remote Sensing treats the process as a continuous flow. Schott examines the limitations obstructing the flow of information to the user, employing numerous applications of remote sensing to earth observation disciplines. For this second edition, in addition to a thorough update, there are major changes and additions, such as a much more complete treatment of spectroscopic imaging, which has matured dramatically in the last ten years, and a more rigorous treatment of image processing with an emphasis on spectral image processing algorithms. Remote Sensing is an ideal first text in remote sensing for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the physical or engineering sciences, and will also serve as a valuable reference for practitioners.
