OS X Leopard - Improving The Dock (Video Guide)
with Stacks Overlays and Hierarchy Menu
One of Leopard’s most popular, and certainly controversial features, is Stacks. It allows you to quickly see items in a folder placed in the dock. But I think we have not thought of the more clever uses of Stacks yet. This little tip involves a Stack, and our friend, iWork (or your favorite application suite), and can be used to group similar apps together for easy access. Try this with one of your most used software suites or a group of programs that fit within your workflow. You might also try placing all of your favorite system utilities in a folder and making a Stack for that. The process is really simple.
Stacks is pretty much Leopard’s only non-eyecandy change to the dock, and it had the potential to be pretty handy, but the fact that the icon representing the stack is whatever the top file in the folder happens to be really ruins it (for me at least). However, if you haven’t yet given up on stacks and thrown them off your dock, there is a solution: overlaying stacks icons.
