Packet Tracer 4.0 (PT4.0). Packet Tracer simulation software can be used to teach complex CCNA-level networking concepts and to supplement classroom equipment. With PT4.0, instructors and students can design, build, configure, and troubleshoot networks using virtual equipment. PT4.0 provides a more realistic simulation and visualization environment than PT3.2, with continuous real-time updates of previously static views of underlying network logic and activity. It provides a common environment for instructors to demonstrate technologies and configurations, making it extremely useful for lectures, group and individual labs, homework, and competitions. Students can use PT4.0 to explore concepts, conduct experiments, and test their understanding.
Download the preview edition of PT4.0 from the Packet Tracer Discussion Forum to experience the enhancements. A short PT4.0 promotional video is also available. A stand-alone, Flash-based training tutorial will be available after June 20, 2006. The final edition of PT4.0 will be available on the Tools page of Academy Connection after September 1, 2006. Both versions include all 4.0 enhancements. There will also be opportunities for hands-on training at upcoming instructor meetings.
PT4.0 includes the following features:
Logical topology mode: Primary workspace for creating networks of any size at a CCNA-level of complexity
Real-time mode: Now models real-time protocol updates
Simulation mode: Global packet sniffer allows for detailed study of protocol interactions with in-depth display of network details.
Physical topology mode: More intuitive interaction with physical devices, with physical layout and distance representation including city, building, and rack views
Improved GUI: Increased student understanding of networking fundamentals with device tables and numerous means of annotation
Multiple-language support: Instructions included for translation into other languages by any end user or group
Refined physical interfaces: Models realistic equipment set up including adding and removing components
Knowledge representations: Offers discovery learning by enabling "what if?" scenarios using simulation-mode visualization features that allow students to freeze time
Activity Wizard improvements: Instructors and students can easily create and share network templates and assessment activities.
