Some basic assumption about what we're doing and why we're doing it is incorrect. Yes, incorrect. But we continue to behave as if nothing is wrong. The pain is there but now the problem is that it's so ubiquitous that we've become desensitized to it. Like the buzzing the florescent lights make (yes, they do make an annoying sound) or the violence on TV, we've just gotten so used to having it around we've come up with coping mechanisms to deal with it.
