Learning jQuery 1.3

Learning jQuery 1.3
Packt Publishing (February 13, 2009) | ISBN: 1847196705 | 444 pages | PDF | 10 MB

To build interesting, interactive sites, developers are turning to JavaScript libraries such as jQuery to automate common tasks and simplify complicated ones. Because many web developers have more experience with HTML and CSS than with JavaScript, the library’s design lends itself to a quick start for designers with little programming experience. Experienced programmers will also be aided by its conceptual consistency.

Revised and updated for version 1.3 of jQuery, this book teaches you the basics of jQuery for adding interactions and animations to your pages. Even if previous attempts at writing JavaScript have left you baffled, this book will guide you past the pitfalls associated with AJAX, events, effects, and advanced JavaScript language features.

In this book, the authors share their knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm about jQuery to help you get the most from the library and to make your web applications shine. The book introduces jQuery and shows how you can write a functioning jQuery program in just three lines of code. It then guides you through CSS selectors and shows how to enhance the basic event handling mechanisms to give them a more elegant syntax. You will then learn to add impact to your actions through a set of simple visual effects and also to create, copy, reassemble, and embellish content using jQuery’s DOM modification methods. You will also learn to send and retrieve information with AJAX methods. The book will then step you through many detailed, real-world examples and even equip you to extend the jQuery library itself with your own plug-ins.

Better Interaction Design and Web Development with Simple JavaScript Techniques

* An introduction to jQuery that requires minimal programming experience
* Detailed solutions to specific client-side problems

* For developers to create the best user interface for their web applications
* Packed with great examples, code, and clear explanations
* Revised and updated version of the first book to help you learn jQuery

What you will learn from this book?

This book will give you the tools you need to be on the cutting edge of the web development community. With these techniques at your disposal, you can:

* Use selectors to get anything you want from a page
* Make things happen on your page with events
* Add flair to your actions with animation effects
* Change your page on command with DOM manipulation
* Use AJAX to get the most out of server-side code
* Transform drab, static information containers into beautiful, dynamic tables
* Breathe new life into online forms
* Create dynamic shufflers, rotators, and galleries
* Get started with official jQuery plug-ins
* Customize by writing your own jQuery plug-ins

Approach

This book begins with a tutorial to jQuery, followed by an examination of common, real-world client-side problems, and solutions to each of them making it an invaluable resource for answers to all your jQuery questions.

Who this book is written for?

This book is for web designers who want to create interactive elements for their designs, and for developers who want to create the best user interface for their web applications. Basic JavaScript programming knowledge is required. You will need to know the basics of HTML and CSS, and should be comfortable with the syntax of JavaScript. No knowledge of jQuery is assumed, nor is experience with any other JavaScript libraries required.

Embedded Systems Interfacing for Engineers Using the Freescale Hcs08 Microcontroller I: Assembly Language Programming

Douglas Summerville "Embedded Systems Interfacing for Engineers Using the Freescale Hcs08 Microcontroller I: Assembly Language Programming"
Morgan & Claypool | 2009-06-15 | ISBN: 1608450058 | 120 pages | PDF | 1.1 MB

The vast majority of computers in use today are encapsulated within other systems. In contrast to general-purpose computers that run an endless selection of software, these embedded computers are often programmed for a very specific, low-level and often mundane purpose. Low-end microcontrollers, costing as little as one dollar, are often employed by engineers in designs that utilize only a small fraction of the processing capability of the device because it is either more cost-effective than selecting an application-specific part or because programmability offers custom functionality not otherwise available. Embedded Systems Interfacing for Engineers using the Freescale HCS08 Microcontroller is a two-part book intended to provide an introduction to hardware and software interfacing for engineers. Building from a comprehensive introduction of fundamental computing concepts, the book suitable for a first course in computer organization for electrical or computer engineering students with a minimal background in digital logic and programming. In addition, this book can be valuable as a reference for engineers new to the Freescale HCS08 family of microcontrollers. The HCS08 processor architecture used in the book is relatively simple to learn, powerful enough to apply towards a wide-range of interfacing tasks, and accommodates breadboard prototyping in a laboratory using freely available and low-cost tools. In Part I: Assembly Language Programming, the programmer's model of the HSC08 family of processors is introduced. This part leads the reader from basic concepts up to implementing basic software control structures in assembly language. Instead of focusing on large-scale programs, the emphasis is on implementing small algorithms necessary to accomplish some of the more common tasks expected in small embedded systems. The first part prepares the reader with the programming skills necessary to write device drivers in and perform basic input/output processing Part II, whose emphasis is on hardware interfacing concepts. Table of Contents: Introduction to Microcomputer Organization / Programmer's Model of the HCS08 CPU / HCS08 Assembly Language Programming.

XML Retrieval (Synthesis Lectures on Information Concepts, Retrieval & Services)

Mounia Lalmas "XML Retrieval (Synthesis Lectures on Information Concepts, Retrieval & Services)"
Morgan and Claypool Publishers | 2009-07-09 | ISBN: 1598297864 | 112 pages | PDF | 1.5 MB

Documents usually have a content and a structure. The content refers to the text of the document, whereas the structure refers to how a document is logically organized. An increasingly common way to encode the structure is through the use of a mark-up language. Nowadays, the most widely used mark-up language for representing structure is the eXtensible Mark-up Language (XML). XML can be used to provide a focused access to documents, i.e. returning XML elements, such as sections and paragraphs, instead of whole documents in response to a query. Such focused strategies are of particular benefit for information repositories containing long documents, or documents covering a wide variety of topics, where users are directed to the most relevant content within a document. The increased adoption of XML to represent a document structure requires the development of tools to effectively access documents marked-up in XML. This book provides a detailed description of query languages, indexing strategies, ranking algorithms, presentation scenarios developed to access XML documents. Major advances in XML retrival were seen from 2002 as a result of INEX, the Initiative for Evaluation of XML Retrieval. INEX, also described in this book, provided test sets for evaluating XML retrieval effectiveness. Many of the developments and results described in this book were investigated within INEX. Table of Contents: Introduction / Basic XML Concepts / Historical Perspectives / Query Languages / Indexing Strategies / Ranking Strategies / Presentation strategies / Evaluating XML Retrieval Effectiveness / Conclusions

The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Advertising for Social Media Web Sites

The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Advertising for Social Media Web Sites

Product Description
This econometric study covers the world outlook for advertising for social media Web sites across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E. for advertising for social media Web sites. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world’s regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

XAML in a Nutshell

XAML in a Nutshell

XAML in a Nutshell

Product Description

When Microsoft releases Windows Vista, the new operating system will support applications that employ graphics now used by computer games–clear, stunning, and active. The cornerstone for building these new user interfaces is XAML (”Zammel”), the XML-based markup language that works with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Vista’s new graphics subsystem.

An acronym for Extensible Application Markup Language, XAML offers a wealth of new controls and elements with exciting capabilities, including animation and rendering of 3D graphics. Windows developers are already jazzed by the possibilities of using XAML for fixed and flow format documents like PDF and HTML, 2D and 3D vector-based graphics, form development, animation, audio and video, transparent layering, and a lot more. Many feel that XAML will eliminate the need for multiple file formats or plug-ins (read: Flash), while lowering development costs and reducing time to market.

The problem is, most developers don’t know XAML. While it is fairly easy to understand, you still need a quick guide to bring you up to speed before Vista’s release, and that’s where this book’s simple, no nonsense approach comes in.

XAML in a Nutshell covers everything necessary to design user interfaces and .NET applications that take advantage of WPF. Prerequisites such as Microsoft’s new unified build system, MSBuild, and core XAML constructs and syntax–including shortcuts–are all presented with plenty of examples to get you started. The Core XAML Reference section lets you dig even deeper into syntax rules and attributes for all XAML elements with a series of quick-reference chapters. This section divides XAML elements into logical categories of elements, controls, shapes and geometry, layout, animations, and transformations for easy reference.

XAML in a Nutshell helps you learn, firsthand, how to use this XML-based markup language to implement the new generation of user interface graphics. As one reviewer noted, “Strong code examples and an efficient, conversational style take the tedium out of learning XAML and make the subject understandable–even interesting.”
