What started as a mild interest in computing was transformed almost overnight into a passion, when David was posted to Japan in 1987 as BBC correspondent in Tokyo. With no corporate IT department just down the hallway, he was forced to learn how to fix everything himself. When not tinkering with the innards of his computer, he was reporting for BBC TV and radio on the rise and collapse of the Japanese bubble economy. Since leaving the BBC to work independently, he has built up an online bilingual database of economic and political analysis for Japanese clients of an international consultancy.

When not pounding the keyboard writing books or dreaming of new ways of using PHP and other programming languages, David enjoys nothing better than visiting his favorite sushi restaurant. He has also translated several plays from Japanese.

The Cambridge Companion to the Quran

The Cambridge Companion to the Quran

Product Description
As the living scriptural heritage of more than a billion people, the Qur’an (Koran) speaks with a powerful voice. Just as other scriptural religions, Islam has produced a long tradition of interpretation for its holy book. Nevertheless, efforts to introduce the Qur’an and its intellectual heritage to English-speaking audiences have been hampered by the lack of available resources. The Cambridge Companion to the Qur’an seeks to remedy that situation. In a discerning summation of the field, Jane McAuliffe brings together an international team of scholars to explain its complexities. Comprising fourteen chapters, each devoted to a topic of central importance, the book is rich in historical, linguistic and literary detail, while also reflecting the influence of other disciplines. For both the university student and the general reader, The Cambridge Companion to the Qur’an provides a fascinating entrée to a text that has shaped the lives of millions for centuries.

Beowulf Cluster Computing with Linux, 2nd Edition (Scientific and Engineering Computation)

Beowulf Cluster Computing with Linux, 2nd Edition (Scientific and Engineering Computation)

Product Description
Use of Beowulf clusters (collections of off-the-shelf commodity computers programmed to act in concert, resulting in supercomputer performance at a fraction of the cost) has spread far and wide in the computational science community. Many application groups are assembling and operating their own “private supercomputers” rather than relying on centralized computing centers. Such clusters are used in climate modeling, computational biology, astrophysics, and materials science, as well as non-traditional areas such as financial modeling and entertainment. Much of this new popularity can be attributed to the growth of the open-source movement.

The second edition of Beowulf Cluster Computing with Linux has been completely updated; all three stand-alone sections have important new material. The introductory material in the first part now includes a new chapter giving an overview of the book and background on cluster-specific issues, including why and how to choose a cluster, as well as new chapters on cluster initialization systems (including ROCKS and OSCAR) and on network setup and tuning. The information on parallel programming in the second part now includes chapters on basic parallel programming and available libraries and programs for clusters. The third and largest part of the book, which describes software infrastructure and tools for managing cluster resources, has new material on cluster management and on the Scyld system.

Cisco Cookbook

Cisco Cookbook

Book Description
Everybody who has worked with Cisco routers for any length of time has had to ask their friends and co-workers for example router configuration files that show how to solve a common problem. A good working configuration example can often save huge amounts of time and frustration when implementing a feature that you’ve never used before. The Cisco Cookbook gathers hundreds of example router configurations all in one place. As the name suggests, Cisco Cookbook is organized as a series of recipes. Each recipe begins with a problem statement that describes a common situation that you might face.

After each problem statement is a brief solution that shows a sample router configuration or script that you can use to resolve this particular problem. A discussion section then describes the solution, how it works, and when you should or should not use it. The chapters are organized by the feature or protocol discussed. If you are looking for information on a particular feature such as NAT, NTP or SNMP, you can turn to that chapter and find a variety of related recipes. Most chapters list basic problems first, and any unusual or complicated situations last. The Cisco Cookbook will quickly become your “go to” resource for researching and solving complex router configuration issues, saving you time and making your network more efficient.

IQ Mindbenders

Prepare yourself for the ultimate test of your brain power!
We’re devised over 500 IQ puzzles to stretch your logical and lateral thinking abilities to the limit.
This book has been meticulously compiled from some of the most devious puzzles you’ve seen. Some will require keen mathematical skill, others an ability to recognise abstract patterns, but all our puzzles are supremely logical and can be solved with the right approach.
If you have a sharp mind, some of the answers to these puzzles will jump straight out of the page at you. However, others will require a bit more thought. Try not to rush for an answer straight away – have faith in your abilities and all will become clear – and don’t feel tempted to have a peek at the answer page too soon. If you feel completely stumped by one particular puzzle, then move on and come back to it later – coming up with the solution to a later puzzle just might give you the inspiration you need!

But the idea of this book is not about right and wrong answers, it’s about exercising your mind and flexing your mental muscles. With the right approach, you too can discover your IQ potential.

The large variety of puzzles here are designed to test your powers of lateral thinking and problem solving to the max! You’ll have to be able to recognize patterns and sequences, spot similarities and differences and even pick your way through our convoluted mindbenders.

The solutions to all the puzzles in this book are staring you right in the face – you just have to be looking at them in the right way!
So sit back, relax your body and let your brain take the strain – it’s all a matter of logic.

JavaServer Pages, Third Edition

JavaServer Pages, Third Edition

Book description
JavaServer Pages, Third Edition is completely revised and updated to cover the substantial changes in the 2.0 version of the JSP specification. It also includes detailed coverage of the major revisions to the JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL) specification. Combining plenty of practical advice with detailed coverage of JSP syntax and features and clear, useful examples, JavaServer Pages, Third Edition demonstrates how to embed server-side Java into Web pages, while also covering important topics such as JavaBeans, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), and JDBC database access.

JavaServer Pages (JSP) has built a huge following since the release of JSP 1.0 in 1999, providing Enterprise Java developers with a flexible tool for the development of dynamic web sites and web applications. While new point releases over the years, along with the introduction of the JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL), have incrementally improved the rough areas of the first version of the JSP specification, JSP 2.0 takes this technology to new heights. JavaServer Pages, Third Edition, is completely revised and updated to cover the JSP 2.0 and JSTL 1.1 specifications. It includes detailed coverage of the Expression Language (EL) incorporated into JSP 2.0, the JSTL 1.1 tag libraries and the new function library, the new tag file format that enables custom tag library development without Java code, the simplified Java tag library API, improvements in the JSP XML syntax, and more. Further, it details setup of the Apache Tomcat server, JSP and JSTL syntax and features, error handling and debugging, authentication and personalization, database access, XML processing, and internationalization. This book recognizes the different needs of the two groups of professionals who want to learn JSP: page authors interested in using JSP elements in web pages, and programmers concerned with learning the JSP API and using JSP effectively as a part of an enterprise application. If you’re in the first group, you’ll learn from the practical web application examples in the second part of the book. If you’re in the latter group, you’ll appreciate the detailed coverage of advanced topics in the third part, such as how to integrate servlets and JavaBeans components with JSP using the popular Apache Struts MVC framework, and how to develop custom tag libraries using the JSP API, with realistic examples that you can use as a springboard for your own libraries. “Hans Bergsten, a JSP expert group veteran and one of our most active contributors, has thoroughly and accurately captured the new features of JSP 2.0 and JSTL 1.1 in a way that is well-organized and easy to understand. With excellent, to-the-point examples, this book is a ‘must have’ for any serious JSP 2.0 developer.” –Mark Roth, JSP 2.0 Specification Lead, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Hans Bergsten is the founder of Gefion Software, a company focused on Java services and products based on J2EE technologies. Hans has been an active participant in the working groups for both the servlet and JSP specifications since their inception and contributes to other related JCP specifications, such as JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL) and JavaServer Faces (JSF), and, as one of the initial members of the Apache Jakarta Project Management Committee, helped develop the Apache Tomcat reference implementation for the servlet and JSP specifications.

Water4Gas - Build a Water-Hydro Kit to run any Car/Truck on Water

Water4Gas - Build a Water-Hydro Kit to run any Car/Truck on Water

With worldwide fuel prices on the rise, everyone is searching for cheaper ways to get around. The technology is already available, but most people don’t really know much about it.
Read this book to learn how to build your own water-hydro converter so that your vehicle will significantly increase it’s MPG or KM/L – using not much more than small investment for materials and tools, and an on going supply of water.

Is It Possible to Run My Car/Truck on Water?
Water is supplemental to gasoline (petrol) or diesel fuel. However it is possible and VERY EASY to extract energy from water to run your car on water too.

We have water-to-energy converters running in all our vehicles since 2006. YOU CAN TOO. I’m about to tell you about a SIMPLE technology you can have right now, called Water4Gas. It’s one of the most PRACTICAL free-energy devices, marked by extraordinary simplicity and effectiveness.
Water4Gas is NOT my invention. And it’s not new. Based on old “forgotten” science that is well documented in US Patents we have developed devices that use a little electricity out of your car/truck battery, to separate water into a gas called “HHO” (2 parts Hydrogen + 1 Oxygen). HHO, also called Brown’s Gas or Hydroxy, burns beautifully and provides TONS of energy - while the end product is just WATER! Mobile Magazine says: HHO provides the atomic power of Hydrogen, while maintaining the chemical stability of water.
DID YOU KNOW: Pound for pound HHO GAS IS 3 TIMES MORE POTENT THAN GASOLINE!!! HHO is a fast growing trend for boosting performance and MPG.

We took a 90-year-old suppressed technology,
We SIMPLIFIED it using everyday hardware,
You will discover how affordable yet very effective these devices are.
You get permission to replicate our devices - for personal savings or business profit!
Easy to install & maintain.
Good for carb/fuel injection, gas/diesel.

Old/new cars, motorhomes and now even big rig trucks with our “6-pack”!
The Time Has Come For This Technology
Everybody’s talking about the power of Hydrogen. What they don’t tell you is that Hydrogen vehicles with their pressurized hydrogen, and hydrogen gas stations - are a BIG safety hazard.
It gets worse: hydrogen factories pollute the environment and spoil the ecological advantage of hydrogen “clean” cars.
The Water4Gas solution provides you with “Hydrogen-On-Demand” - you produce Hydrogen when you need it. No storage tanks!!! Far better for the environment; perfectly safe for you and your passengers. I speak from personal experience and the experience of over 10,000 satisfied customers (yes, it has become quite a movement).

Hacking Exposed 5th Edition

Hacking Exposed 5th Edition

A lot of computer-security textbooks approach the subject from a defensive point of view. “Do this, and probably you’ll survive a particular kind of attack,” they say. In refreshing contrast, Hacking Exposed, Second Edition talks about security from an offensive angle. A Jane’s-like catalog of the weaponry that black-hat hackers use is laid out in full. Readers see what programs are out there, get a rundown on what the programs can do, and benefit from detailed explanations of concepts (such as wardialing and rootkits) that most system administrators kind of understand, but perhaps not in detail. The book also walks through how to use the more powerful and popular hacker software, including L0phtCrack. This new edition has been updated extensively, largely with the results of “honeypot” exercises (in which attacks on sacrificial machines are monitored) and Windows 2000 public security trials. There’s a lot of new stuff on e-mail worms, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and attacks that involve routing protocols.

The result of all of this familiarity with bad-guy tools is a leg up on defending against them. Hacking Exposed wastes no time in explaining how to implement the countermeasures–where they exist–that will render known attacks ineffective. Taking on the major network operating systems and network devices one at a time, the authors tell you exactly what Unix configuration files to alter, what Windows NT Registry keys to change, and what settings to make in NetWare. They spare no criticism of products with which they aren’t impressed, and don’t hesitate to point out inherent, uncorrectable security weaknesses where they find them. This book is no mere rehashing of generally accepted security practices. It and its companion Web site are the best way for all of you network administrators to know thine enemies.
Topics covered:
*Security vulnerabilities of operating systems, applications, and network devices
*Administrative procedures that will help defeat them
*Techniques for hacking Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Novell NetWare, and Unix
*Strategies for breaking into (or bringing down) telephony devices, routers, and firewalls
