Microsoft’s network protocol structure is designed around the idea of layering. By defining the functions for individual layers and specifying the interfaces between them, you can replace any one layer without affecting the others. For example, you can update or change a network interface card driver without affecting the TCP/IP driver. The idea of layering was also used to design the OSI model, though Microsoft’s layers do not correspond well with OSI.

The layering approach helps speed development by allowing a development group to focus on one specific area at a time. If the developers comply with the specifications for the interface into and out of their layer, they are assured it will function correctly. This also reduces the amount of time that must be spent in testing because it eliminates dependencies between separate layers. Finally, it allows anyone to replace one of these layers at will. The most common example is that manufacturers of network cards generally create a Windows NT driver for their product–yet they are not required to create a separate driver for each network-layer protocol. Because each protocol must use the same interface to speak to the network card, compatibility is guaranteed.
