The Cisco Interactive Mentor—Router Basics (CIM—Router Basics) interactive learning product is the first in a series of upcoming Cisco training products, and is intended as an introduction to the fundamental concepts needed to begin using Cisco router products. The product includes an overview of the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS®) command line interface (CLI); routing principles; Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), a well-known and widely used set of protocols that is widely implemented today throughout the Internet; and Routing Information Protocol (RIP).
While overviews of routing principles, TCP/IP, and RIP are presented, the main purpose of this product is to familiarize the user with the use and features of the Cisco IOS CLI. Upcoming CIM products will cover routing principles and protocols in greater detail.
To provide you with hands-on lab exercises, you will be using the Cisco 4000 series router for all the Configuration and Challenge Labs in this tutorial. All configuration references in this tutorial refer to the Cisco 4000 series router, unless otherwise stated.
In addition to learning to navigate within the Cisco IOS CLI, you will also learn to actually configure a Cisco 4000 series router for basic operation. You will also learn to configure RIP on the routers in a small internetwork and establish connectivity between the routers.
